Not as much as Byrd's past.  

Kennedy had a accident because he was doing something really stupid (driving
while drunk) and followed up with stupid actions...and unfortunately someone
died as a result.

Byrd on the other hand just didn't stand up for what was right in his youth
when he had the chance to and instead chose what was popular instead.

I do think that both men really regretted their bad decisions in their past
and their careers have shown that they deeply cared about people and learned
from their mistakes and chose to live a life where they could make a
difference.
