Russia is a "democracy" in name.  In practice, it's debatable.  It is
basically ran by former KGB agents who use their connections and power to
suppress opposition and free press.  Don't take my word for it though.  Do
some research and see what you find.

And just because they aren't communist, it doesn't mean that the USA and
Russia don't spy on each other.  When two countries have such large nuclear
arsenal and economic power, it's probably a good idea to see what's going on
behind the curtains.
