The "epitome of freedom and democracy" only means that we do it better than everyone else. Is that true? Who knows...probably not. But is America a success story for freedom, democracy...liberty? I'd say yes. As a country, we are definitely BY the people...are we FOR the people? Debatable. Everyone is "for" the people, as long as they themselves are taken care of first. That's not American nature..that's Human nature. > Russia has always been portrayed as communist, closed, against human > rights, > cut throat and vicious. > Communist would be apt. Closed? Not really. Against human rights? Again, no one is "against" human rights, they just like to define those rights differently. Cut throat? At times, probably. Vicious? Well, depends...what Stalin did was certainly vicious. > China similarly...hell on earth if you fall afoul of the communist powers > that be. > Well, you are still in a heap of trouble if the Chinese government pegs you as an enemy...but their grip has loosened considerably. And many areas of China live and thrive without hardly a thought to this "big, evil communist government". > Saudi Arabia is supposed to be a dictatorial, backward state where your > life > and limbs are worth less than a bowl of fruit and a kiss could get you > jailed. > Is that what they teach in Trinidad? > Britain is upright and full of integrity, save for that little stint of > Imperialism - fair and unbiased. > Meh. No one is fair and unbiased. And was that a typo? Perhaps you meant "upTight" instead of "upRight", in which case, I'd agree :) > But when you read about things like this...you ask the question is any > nation really 'Good'. > Do any of them stand for what is right? > No. But what some nations stand for and, more importantly, PRACTICE, is more "right" than others. Keeping in mind that what is "right" is highly subjective. > Is there anything they would NOT do if they could get away with it? > Probably....but it's most likely a short list. -- Glittering prizes and endless compromises Shatter the illusion of integrity ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology-Michael-Dinowitz/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-community/message.cfm/messageid:328476 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-community/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-community/unsubscribe.cfm
