I believe you would use an SMS message to get text to the phone, but for them to reply may require wireless web and an HDML/WML application to send something back. One of the projects I did back in early 2000 was mobileid.com, which dealt with making all of that easier for people with net-enabled phones. You could receive regular e-mail, reply to it directly or send pre-defined replies that you configured via the web site, among other things. That site has since gone the way of many others, and I'm sure the technology has all changed since then, so this might not be any help <shrug>. It's a slow day I think.
