Currently the extraction methods use a lot of water and does produce a fair amount of green house gases. That's where the real issue comes in. And it needs to be solved and soon. Oil companies are now starting to look at the oil shale deposits in the US. The methods to extract oil from the Tar Sands will work with the oil shale, but will produce much more greenhouse gases etc.
