There are a couple of good books - archeologists are still arguing about it - religious vs. clan. What is know is that they stopped making statues when a huge (for them) clan war broke out and about 60% of the population died. But the statues are mostly less than a 1000 years old. Easter Island was settled around 1200AD or so.
