on reflection, knee-jerk would work phonetically and with the context of his sentence, But would not explain why he abruptly stopped short like that. I guess my feeling about this is that if you need this to be a deciding factor in whether to support the dude or not, I am not sure what to say to you, and if you do not, it's probably not surprising...
