I am not 100% sure but I think this is a side effect of the way Google
links you to content after a search. When you click a search result you
actually go to something like:

http://www.google.com/?ireallywanted=http://www.thethingIwantedtovisit.com

Then Google does a redirect to the actual page, probably after logging that
you clicked that result. Probably (and I'm just guessing) something about
the redirect makes your browser think "oh that's the favicon I should use
for this site since it's just a redirect from that other site over there".

Then - if you don't tell the browser any different - there you go: Bob's
your Uncle and Google's your favicon.
