First off can you see the external drive. I'm assuming here that its
an external USB drive. have you tried reseating the USB? Assuming
that's not the problem this tutorial may help.

Also learn the Terminal its your friend. You can do a lot more with
that than the finder. Also David Pogue's book on Mountain Lion gives
you some very good suggestions:

Since OSX is just BSD UNIX with a really good interface you may want
to look at some basic Unix books.
