At my new job, there was 1 web server that they used to host a live, stage, dev & a couple of other environments on. Our team said that we really wanted a separate dev server, beyond vm's on our MacBooks, so that we could try stuff without the fear of wiping out the other environments.
Last week we got our dev server. It's 32 cores @ 2.0 Ghz, 125G of ram and 11T of storage space. Holy cow! I was used to deploying my sites on 256M 1 processor vm's at my old job.
