Look at it like this. What we're experiencing is basically the after effects of the death if the British empire. From Asia west through the middle east and down into Africa.
A lot of this upheaval seems to be to still be related to the end of colonialism. So why don't we practice what we preach. Support the idea of both Shia and Sunni states. Local self determination. Internally to these new states it would likely be brutal and ugly, but lead to real reform I think. Think the reformation/Martin Luther kinda reforms. The Persian are very western in their outlook, culture and dress. Egypt, much of Iraq, Syria, Jordan and other nations in the region have decent standards of living and if we stop supporting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, that would dead stop a ton of whabist programs and terror. Most definitely be a win for the women of the Islamic world. How long do you see these people living under sharia law? I just don't see it. Containment and support. Big stick, soft voice.
