Found a great way to stay cooler on hot days:

an Australian creation called the Cobber.

looks like a thin necktie when you first get it, even
comes in a little cardboard sleeve with a hanger clip
like a necktie.

but you can feel crystals in the fabric.

Soak it in clean water, and the crystals hydrate, turn
into a gel, and it swells up to about 1" in diameter
with some plain fabric at both ends.

Tie it around your neck or forehead, it quickly doesn't
feel wet - but it will cool you for 2 or 3 days (yes,
DAYS) with no refrigeration.

When it "runs down", soak it in water for 15 - 20
minutes, use it for a couple more days.

Leave it alone for a while, it goes back to the mild-
mannered necktie persona. They say it can be re-hydrated
for years.

And it's cheap.

(Wrapped around your neck, it lowers your whole body
temperature by cooling the carotid arteries via
evaporative cooling.)

Watch the wrap:

So, I now have Tilley hats, Tilley shorts, Tilley belts,
and a Cobber from Tilley. No, they don't pay me <g>, but
I have been delighted with their products and service.

Am going to give it a tough field test next week -
driving around Kaua'i in a convertible <big grin>
