40,000 troops are nothing to sneeze at, especially since the British forces
were very pressed to defend its interests elsewhere, such as India, the
Caribbean, and in Europe. At the same time as the American Revolution, the
British were fighting a naval war against Holland and France, and a war of
conquest in Mogul India.
