Oh also you might want to try granting access to root for "%" hosts from the command line, so that root can access the database server from anywhere. See http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/GRANT.html for details...
As a matter of security you shouldn't leave it like this, but during the set up period it'll probably be useful. After that you need to set up users that are restricted to accessing the server from specific locations and only having limited priviledges and viewing abilities.
