I'm a computer science grad and yes, it did help, a lot of the syntax
was very familiar and I find it quite readable. I don't think a decent
CF programmer would have too many problems though.

To start off with I got Sams teach yourself PHP in 24 hours and teach
yourself mysql in 24 hrs, they gave me a good basic introduction. The
O'Reily book is next on the list. http://www.php.net is the best website
to start exploring from.
