Not really the Federal Govt said they were rebels so they were rebels. But i see your point of they were not tryign to overthrow But they did basically OVERTHROW the govt in the south with there own form so in another set of eyes it COULD be argued it was a rebellion. Of course the Federal Govt won the war so they called it a rebellion so its a rebellion, to the victor go the spoils of war
