Hmmm, it's made pretty obvious why in the Japanese version. There was a sequel and prequel made over there. I was pretty spooked out watching it...our phone actually rang during the movie, and neither me nor my girlfriend wanted to answer it. :)
I actually went to the theater to see the American one this weekend but it was sold out, so we saw Harry Potter.
