Personally I think that equating these kind of stats to gun control is very short-sighted. First off the story stated right off that the member countries calculate crime in different ways - so the stats are immediately suspect. Secondly regardless of your stance on Gun control note that the US stats aren't that far off from Britain (well, pretty far - but still second). So claiming that gun control or lack of gun control is a factor seems a little untenable. Lastly, and I think most importantly, the factors at work are simply too many to apply simple cause-effect aspects. Would less gun control be the cause of more crime or less crime in Britain? There are examples of countries with no gun control and very low crime rates and examples of countries with significant gun control and high crime rates - and vice versa all 'round. So what applies? There must be (many) other factors.
