The trailers in combination with digging through the website at www.startrek.com helped me find the following. If you would rather do the digging, don't scroll :)
The aliens are inhabitants of Remus, the second planet of the Romulan system. Their appearance has changed because they live on the "dark side" of their planet, becuase the other half always faces it's sun. They are considered an undesirable caste in the Romulan hierarchy. If you want more, go to the site... but you'll have to go into the flash portion, I couldn't find anything in the non-flash about the history of Remus, and that's where it kinda digs in. Also, there is a different trailer than I've seen on TV on the website.
