In Israel, all boys of a certain age (17 or 18) have to go to the army, or do some kind of national service. Married men work in the reserves. Many of the religious girls opt for national service (i.e., working in a hospital). There are exemptions for those doing serious Torah study, but there are religious units in the army as well.
I agree with Timothy and Matthew -- I think it would be a great idea for this country to have, if not mandatory army service, some sort of mandatory national service requirement for a year or two. I'm taking Pakua now (a martial art that is supposed to predate Karate and Tai Chi) and I'm learning a lot just from that. I can see how the army would teach a lot of self control and self reliance, as well as responsibility. I'll be evaluated for a yellow belt next week. (Ack!) Hoping I don't fall flat on my face ...
