I recently won a freelance project by laying down a flat price. After taking a look at the specs, I realized it would take me about four weeks on evenings and weekends to do it. I bid my monthly take home salary, and came in at one sixth of the competition's price.
Thus far, things are going swimmingly and I have no complaints about the work - in fact, they seem to appreciate being able to work directly with the developer. Maybe that works for you...
