There have been some DVD players that are region selectable, but they
usually get taken away. I still stumble across them online, but I'm
personally more interested in a good quality player than a crappy one
that can play all regions badly.

Why did they do it? Why do they do anything? Greed. Pure and simple. Box
office sales are what matter and overseas sales really count for huge
profits on movies that are otherwise ho-hum. If you've seen a ho-hum
movie on DVD already, will you go to a theater to see it? By ho-hum, I
mean movies like The Specialist with Sylvester Stallone.
