Ale doesn't travel well. The best ales are brewed locally. Bass I think is brewed in Reading (or is that Courage) and Newci is brewed up North. They are quite 'lite' ales.
I think locally you have Bath Abbey Ales, Wych Breweries and a couple of others. The beers are a lot more malty usually, but again it is down to the individual beer (and the brewer who decides). Have a look at http://www.camra.co.uk/ It should give you all the info you should ever need :) It is quite an honour to have a pub recommended by CAMRA. Actually, the funniest was a recent pub I whent into (The Bell, Walcott Street, Bath). Really good selection of cask beers. Asked for Pork Scratchings (Basically deep fried pork, alternative toi crisps/chips).
