Interesting statement. I recall neighborhood theatres that were set up here for
the explicit purpose of screening only "family" type movies. No PG-13, or
higher ratings. 100% of them have gone bankrupt, or closed down. So much for
"family oriented theatres" On the other hand, it is a money and profit
motivation.
By restricting the theatre to Adults only, the theatre operator will make more
profit, and can eliminate expenses that would be required to cater to children,
and protective measures.

I know there are plenty of families with kids that will drag them along to
screenings of inappropriate subject matter, mainly because it is of interest to
the parent. There are more that prefer to invest in DVDs as an expense
reduction item, because going out in a family group to a theater, purchasing
tickets and refreshments is no small expense.

A very good friend of mine here is the operator of the largest theatre chain in
the city, and he has been considering for the longest, putting in the
restriction to "adults only" and has already done so in several of his theatre
complexes. Doing thus does have an impact on certain ticket sales, and the huge
amount of revenue that the game machines in the lobby generate, mostly from
kids. He complains all the time about having to hire special security guards
just to patrol the rest rooms, etc for the kids protection, an expense he would
really like to eliminate. He feels that catering to adults will substantially
improve the bottom line, without all the hassles of dealing with other people's
kids.

| Of course it's people without kids that are the ones who can ALREADY easily
| go to see movies.
|
| People with kids tend to suspend their theater going. It may be more
| intelligent to try to EXPAND the audience rather than restrict it. For
| example several theaters in this area have installed sound proof "family
| rooms" with their own sound systems.
|
| This way whole families can go to see a movie (and pay for overpriced
| tickets and buy overpriced candy) without bothering other patrons.
