It was doubtful that AOL ever really wanted to replace IE with Netscape in
any case... after five versions using IE this change would have cost them
big.  The dabbled - the new (and I believe universally reviled) Compuserve
client was an attempt, but they were never serious.

For MS's part they maintain browser numbers and, if I remember correctly,
AOL will begin using Windows Media as well (presumably dumping
RealNetworks).  Another large part of this is that both companies have
agreed to work together on Instant Messaging (finally!)

I'm honestly not sure why MS bothers with MSN as an ISP at all.  I can
definitely see it as an umbrella for MS website properties (many of which
are simply best of class) but as an ISP?  Dump it, let the customers go to
AOL and get MS software from them.
