Beth - All I can say is that's what you get for messing around with unlicensed copies of software. Microsoft's product activation features are serious business, and hopefully you will take this as a learning experience. You're really lucky this stopped with a fire, the next step is orbital space based lasers consuming the entire town until all machines are brought into compliance.
Seriously, tho, it sounded like you are keeping your patient and billing information backed up on tapes on site. For this kind of information, you need a more robust backup plan - I mean, we are talking about people's lives. Think about keeping backups off site in a secure location, and maybe keeping a duplicate in a second location just in case.
