Found the answer.

I created a b atch file on the destop called shutdown.bat.

That contains the single line:

shutdown.exe -s.

shutdown.exe is a windows command line function to shut down a computer
in Windows XP.

So I just used the Task Scheduler to set the machine to run shutdown.bat
evey night at 7 :-)

Do you need it to shut down and immediately restart (to clear some kind
of memory issue) ?

Or do you need it to shut down until 8am or some length of time?

If crude works for you, or you need to shut it down for a period of
time, go to home depot or Sears and buy a power switch timer.

I have used these successfully for years to reboot remote kiosks every
night, and to turn some off during non-business hours.
