used to be able to buy? There was a Star Destroyer that had a bay at the
bottom and a little white ship that was supposed to be the one the
Empire captured Leia in. Good weight to it, and very detailed.
Anyways, I have had one since I can remember, but I hadn't seen it for
years. On Saturday, I'm cleaning out my closet and come across a box
filled with old stuff - GI Joes, Garbage Pail Kids, that Transformer
that looked like a Veritech, some 20-sided dice and a
Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book. The bottom of the box broke, and all
this stuff from when I was a kid spilled out onto the floor. I cleaned
it up but missed the Star Destroyer for some reason.
Later, my daughter and I are picking up in her room, and I tell her not
to leave big messes all over the floor because I hate stepping on little
pieces of plastic left around by careless children. I go back into my
room to get something, and when I come back, OUCH, I step on something
sharp, BANG, I hit my head on the closet door, CRASH, I drop plates and
utensils from breakfast all over the place, and HOPPING AROUND IN PAIN I
step on the sharp thing again with my other foot.
Moments pass as I leap unsteadily to safety. As I prepare the voice of
absolute parental condemnation and compare what I want to say to my list
of that which shall never be uttered aloud in the presence of a child, I
notice the thing I stepped on happens to be my old Star Destroyer. This
*blew* me away because when I was 7 my father stepped on that exact same
Star Destroyer and gave me a speech just like the one I gave my daughter
a few minutes before. I fall to the floor, the daughter runs over to see
what happened, and I have nothing to say.
Cruel fate. I have learned nothing in all these years.
