What can you hook me up with for my domains? Charge for name server
use? I just registered one and direct nic had like 4 slots for name
servers, the first 2 populated with theirs. I looked up crystal tech
and put their 2 for #3 & #4.
I knew what they did but didn't know the level of control required(ie
w3c, isp, etc).
Setting up my first production server for paying clients in my house;
been using crystal tech to this point.
Cfmx, .net framework for aspx, msde. I plan for this to be a full blown
service to supplement the income for the site design they are already
paying for. Why send their cash to someone else, right?
I would sincerely appreciate any and all input from the list members
that are doing this. Recommended equipment, power backup options(5
upses, 10 12 volt car batteries on trickle buried in the back yard 6
feet under and sealed and monitored, I don't know), etc. Does the power
company do custom runs for extra stable feeds? How much would a
generator with enough juice for the box, switch, router, just enough to
get the site live, run me? Would it be feasible to rig a battery
powered sensor that would kick off the generator, boot the pc, and so
forth, it lightning or what not killed my main electric?
What do nocs do for this? I'll hit up the guys at work tomorrow, but
would like to walk in with a little info so I can save them time and get
what i need.
Best buy had 160 gb wd hard drives for 80$ after rebate. I got 4; 3 for
the server, 1 for fun. What would be the best raid type (0,1,0+1, etc)
for redudency first, speed/performance second. I want to be able to
lose a whole drive, pop in another, and have a full rebuild from parity.
Thanks,
Matthew P. Smith

GoDaddy charges extra for name servers.
www.registerfly.com provides free name servers.
I can provide name servers.

Subject: domain registration
I need to register a few domains for some sites I am doing at home. I
am currently using directnic. I might be hosting out of the house, so
I
need something that I can just point the domain to an ip on.
(crystaltech has name servers so I don't know if I need something
beyond
the registration)
O have heard godaddy mentioned, haven't looked yet but will do
tonight,
any others I need to check out? Gotchas, etc etc.
Thanks
Matthew P. Smith
