Does the average joe user (which i assume make up most of computer users) really care?  And if they dont care, what difference does it make?

  I agree - however, MS does not controll all the resources. You do not
  have
  to use Windows. You have a choice to use any other OS. Its not the same
  as
  providing electricity or water.
