Working with Coldfusion these past 6 years or so I
have gotten extremely comfortable working with MS-SQL
Server and SQL in general that I don't believe it
would be too wrong for me to apply those skills to a
DBA position (of which there seems to be either a
greater need or greater demand for someone skilled.)
Although it strikes me as amazing that a very specific
subset of expertise can be more valued than diversity
(I find it strange that there is a job where the only
expectation of the DBA is to 'live' in the single
piece of software) similar to my amazement with a
sysadmin and other strange positions. Where in only
moderately smaller shops I have seen these roles
filled by a single person.
However I'm not sure how one would start as a DBA in a
position. Does certification help (i.e. vastly more
important than it does in Application Development). Do
I need to . . . 'repurpose' my resume so that it looks
like I've done Jr. DBA work (or put it in the title).
Or is going back to Tech school and going entry level
the only way to move into that field.
Any thoughts on this? Or is it too off topic?
