Very true.  If the person will be required to think creatively and solve
complex programming issues, you can get some insight into how they solve
problems in general by asking some "Microsoft" style logic puzzles.  While I
wouldn't hire or dismiss someone solely on the answers to these types of
questions, it should help you weed out those who "know" ColdFusion as a
language but have no "clue" with regards to applying it.  I recommend the
book "How Would You Move Mount Fuji?" for more details on that topic.

If you're just looking for someone with a strong command of the language,
pick up a copy of the current certification study guide and pull some of the
tougher questions out of there.

Other than that, it will depend on the specific types of projects you need
done and the past experiences of your candidates in those fields.
