COMPUTER PROGRAMMER II LOCATION: Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Laurel, MD
Position Description: 1. Assist in the development of application requirements and timelines for the North American Breeding Bird Survey database (MS SQL 2005), including the preparation of requirements documents for review by others. Use problem-solving skills to develop appropriate alternatives to be considered while application requirements are being defined. 2. Plan and develop new ColdFusion applications and/or modify existing ColdFusion applications based on the specifications defined in the requirements documents. Utilize experience with ColdFusion 8 in the development of custom tags, functions, and CFCs. Use knowledge of HTML, ColdFusion, Fusebox, CSS, JavaScript, and Ajax. A background with software such as Dreamweaver and/or SQL Studio is highly desired. An understanding of screen design issues that meet all standards including Section 508 compliance and accessibility guidelines is critical. Develop appropriate documentation for all applications. Specific projects will include: Comment tracking application, BBS mapping application updating data entry site for IE 7 and most recent version of Mozilla Firefox. Projects will include--but not be limited to--modification of comment application, BBS mapping application, plus optimizing existing web pages for IE 7.0 and Mozilla Firefox. 3. Work with other programmers and biologists during beta- and live testing of all developed modules. A willingness to develop multiple options for consideration by the testing team is a critical skill set. Use problem-solving skills to develop appropriate alternative options for consideration by others. Communicate with the team to identify and resolve all potential problems. QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in computer science or related field Experience: 4 years of programming experience (which includes 2 years of independent programming) and 1 year of supervising programming personnel. Skills: Demonstrable ability to develop database-driven web applications in ColdFusion and SQL Server 2000 and proficiency with the tools used to develop ColdFusion and SQL Server applications.
