Web Infrastructure Engineer, Entry
The primary purpose of this position is to administer the Web application
infrastructure that are used to design and implement custom Web applications in
support of the various OHSU missions. Areas of focus will include load
balancing, high availability, search engine technologies, content management
and web analytic s.
Additionally this position will perform UNIX and Windows system administration
as needed to support the Web infrastructure. .
Secondarily, this position may assist in the design of technical architecture
and development of enterprise applications. This position may also perform
some database system administration functions in support of RDBMS and
post-relational database management system based applications at OHSU.
This is the entry level position for this classification and all work will be
done under the direction of a Senior Web Engineer or as directed by management.
The position is in the Database, Applications and Web Technical Services group
of ITG. This group is responsible for providing database administration
support; system administration support of enterprise applications and web
engineer administration support for the various OHSU web strategic teams. This
group is responsible for supporting, designing, developing, implementing, and
maintaining processes and procedures to ensure the availability,
confidentiality, security and quality of data in OHSU databases and providing
robust and secure web infrastructure for which ITG is a steward. Additionally
the group provides system administration support of enterprise applications and
web engineering support for the various OHSU web development teams.
The Incumbent will observe due care, objectivity and respect for
confidentiality. All employees must keep confidential what they hear and what
they see when handling, reviewing or observing: communications and records
thereof (calls, email, pages, fax, etc.), data transmission, databases, or
other forms of information. Confidentiality extends the identities of the
parties of the communications, and even to the fact that the communication took
place. When sharing information, consider whether the recipient has a true
âbusiness need to know.â
ITG employees are responsible for the security of OHSU technology. In
exercising their duties, ITG employees must follow OHSUâs security
directives, incorporating security measures in the delivery of their everyday
tasks, and are required to report security concerns to the ITG Security
Engineering team.

1. a) Solution Development and Management:
- Following the ITG Solution Development Life Cycle (SDLC) process may help
with, working with customers to review business processes in order to define
requirements and develop proposals for the implementation of solutions that
will support the objectives and goals of the OHSU Health System.
- May help develop detail plans for the work that will be required to prepare
the approved solution for implementation and to implement the approved solution.
- May help plan the project, including scope of work, time estimation, and
resource assignment.
- Communicate project status (estimate hours, track progress, delays and
completion with appropriate tools and processes for assigned tasks.
b) Web Application Support and Development:
- Monitor utilization of system hardware and software and provide feedback to
system administrators and managers to ensure effective utilization and
performance of Web applications.
- Assist in system maintenance and troubleshooting of Web system software,
implementing fixes, updates and new releases.
- May work with vendor representatives, system administrators and database
system administrators to ensure proper and effective utilization of the Web
platforms.
- Will help monitor the Web community so that all consistently write,
translate, and code software programs and applications according to common and
required specifications.
- Will help with manage the configuration, security, and availability of all
web servers as directed.
- May help select and implement applicable software, platforms, publishing
tools, and programming languages for the development of Web and client server
applications.
- Collaborate with analysts and designers in the development and initiation of
new software programs and applications.
- May consult with database administrator on relational databases as they
pertain to custom Web and client server applications.
- May help with specified tasks partnership with other IT staff to recommend,
and prioritize current and emerging Web technologies and applications.
- Will help to develop, implement and maintain policies for security and
disaster recovery.
- May help Web developers, instructing them in performance consideration and
proper and effective use of Web Development tools.
c) UNIX/Windows Administration:
- May work with current UNIX and Windows administrators on specified tasks for
setting up and configuring web clusters.
- Will help administer and support various coding, performance monitoring and
web tools used in the web infrastructure as trained.
- Will help provide UNIX support for the web infrastructure as needed or
required as trained.
2. Staff development:
- Actively mentor Web managers, coordinate with Database Administration group
members and other ITG staff as appropriate.
- May help serve as a knowledge resource to the developers, instructing them in
performance tuning and the proper and effective use of Web development tools.
3. Professional development:
- Attend classes, seminars and other training forums as appropriate and as
directed by supervisor.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings of the DBA group, ITG, and other
groups, as necessary.
- Maintain technical competence and proficiency on assigned computing systems
(software, hardware and processes).
- Read software vendor documentation, trade publications, or other sources to
learn about management and information technology tools and techniques that can
improve the ability to do the work assigned to this position.
- Participate in appropriate activities that enhance general knowledge of or
ability to do assigned work. This includes, but is not limited to, the
following: attend classes, seminars, and other training forums; attend staff
meetings and other informational sessions; read vendor documentation, trade
publications, or other sources appropriate to position; interact with peers and
other employees to receive and disseminate information
4. Security:
- All ITG employees are responsible for the security of the OHSU information
technology infrastructure. This position has the added responsibility of
ensuring Web application security including security for electronic Protected
Health Information. or Reading, reviewing and acting on security policy and
technical or security directives as appropriate.
5. Other Duties:
- This position may perform other duties as directed by ITG management.
Qualifications Required
Education:
-Bachelorâs degree in computer science or related field and two years of
information technology related experience including two years of application
development experience that included web engineer administrator experience on
the same or similar web application tools, with experience in installing,
configuring and tuning of web application servers and services. One year of
the required experience should include programming on the same or similar web
application tools);
OR
-Bachelorâs degree in computer science or related field and four years of
information technology experience that included two years of programming on
the same or similar web application tools with the responsibilities that
included developing web applications and one year of web engineer
administrator experience on the same or similar web application tools with
experience in installing, configuring and tuning of web application servers and
services;
OR
-Have the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience Required: (below)
- Installing and configuring web server software on multiple OS platforms.
- Installing and managing middle-ware server products.
- Experience with supporting and administrating web authoring and content
management development tools.
- Experience in writing or reviewing code in ColdFusion, PHP, CGI, or Perl
- Experience with load testing and performance tuning of web applications.
- Experience with configuring web Search Engine products (software or
appliance)
- Working technical knowledge of current Internet, protocols, and standards,
including TCP/IP, FTP, HTTP and HTTPS.
- User level experience working with UNIX (Solaris, HP-UX) and/or Linux hosts
operating systems.
Experiences preferred but not required: (below)
- System Administration experience including shell scripting with Window
Servers, UNIX (Solaris, HP-UX) and/or Linux hosts operating systems.
- Experience in compiling multiple open source software in UNIX environments.
- Advanced understanding of object-oriented programming.
- Experience with LDAP/Active Directory and authentication principals.
- Experience with load testing tools such as Mercuryâs Load Runner..
- Experience working with an RDBMS as a DBA and /or developer.
- Experience working with Endeca search engine setup and implementation.
- Experience working with other web application servers such as Oracle
Internet Application Server.
- Experience in an academic medical center or other healthcare environment..
- Experience with service monitoring and alerting tools.
- Ability to understand and work with Network team to create rules for Cisco
Application Control Engine (ACE).\
- Experience with managing SSL Certificates (create, import, export and PEM
format)
- Experience with WebTrends analytics and reporting server.
- Knowledge of CommonSpot content management system.
- Technically fluent in multiple programming and scripting languages such as
ColdFusion, PHP, J2EE, JavaScript, Visual Basic, Perl, C#.
- Experience in N-Tier web environments (Apache 2.x, JRun, PHP, Tomcat,
ColdFusion and Microsoft IIS 5.0/6.0 including knowledge of not only installing
and upgrading but configuring, tuning and troubleshooting.
