The lines from the httpd.conf are:
LoadModule coldfusion_module modules/mod_coldfusion.so
AddHandler type-coldfusion dbm cfm

The problem with compiling the out-the-box mod_coldfusion module is it
does not work between ColdFusion 5 and Apache 2. Looking at old
resources around on the web, it appears there was a version some people
had hacked about with which did work. I suspect that is what is running
on the old servers which are being phased out. However who ever set them
up originally did not save the source code anywhere and I can't find it
still available anywhere.

Not a bad idea about a proxy. A bit of a nasty hack, but it should get
me up and running.

Have you tried re-compiling CF5 module for apache 2.2?
Please post a line of your httpd.conf for loading module
