Dear Rich,

Thank you - I'll add this into the text.

Best wishes,
Alison

I see you have symbols for all salinities except reference salinity, but for
consistency I will point
out that it has a symbol of S_R.

Rich.

Dear Nan, Rich, Rich, John, Roy, All,

This is great! Thank you all for spending the time to get the definition right
for this important quantity.

I know that Nan is keen we reach a conclusion: it seems we are just about
there, and I hope the care and attention this name has received will mean that
we can now settle it for a long time to come. Looking back, I see that psu has
been the topic of sporadic discussion since at least 2006 so it really is good
news that we at last seem to have reached an authoritative and well documented
agreement.

So, to summarize the state of play, I think we have now agreed on:
sea_water_practical_salinity (canonical units: 1)
'Practical Salinity is a determination of the salinity of sea water, based on
its electrical conductance. The measured conductance, corrected for temperature
and pressure, is compared to the conductance of a standard potassium chloride
solution, producing a value on the Practical Salinity Scale of 1978 (PSS-78).
This name should not be used to describe salinity observations made before
1978, or ones not based on conductance measurements. Conversion of Practical
Salinity to other precisely defined salinity measures should use the
appropriate formulas specified by TEOS-10. Other standard names for precisely
defined salinity quantities are sea_water_absolute_salinity (S_A);
sea_water_preformed_salinity (S_*),  sea_water_reference_salinity;
sea_water_cox_salinity (S_C), used for salinity observations between 1967 and
1977; and sea_water_knudsen_salinity (S_K), used for salinity observations
between 1901 and 1966. Salinity quantities that do not match any of the precise
definitions should be given the more general standard name of
sea_water_salinity. Reference: www.teos-10.org<http://www.teos-10.org>; Lewis,
1980 doi:10.1109/JOE.1980.1145448.'

OK?

In the interests of drawing this discussion to a close, unless any objections
are received in the next seven days, this name will be accepted for amendment
in the standard name table.

Best wishes,
Alison

These are good. I like Nan's rephrasing with Roy's substitution, better than
what I wrote.

Hi Nan,

'Determination'? - 'Estimate' sounds lik a guess to me.

Hi all -

I like the simpler version that John made, and Rich Pawlowicz reported
back to me that both versions are acceptable to him, so Nan, do you
think we could resolve the issue you have with John's version?

If so, perhaps we could put this one to bed!

I'm mainly concerned with 'measure of salinity' since it's ... not
that. To keep this
quick, maybe we could simply change word 'measure' to 'estimate'?

Or to make the first sentence more clear, and less a collection of
necessary

phrases, could we break it into 2 and change it to:

Practical Salinity is an estimate of salinity of sea water, based on its
electrical
conductance. The measured conductance, corrected for temperature and
pressure,
is compared to the conductance of a standard potassium chloride
solution, producing
a value on the Practical Salinity Scale of 1978 (PSS-78).

If that's too much, I'll go with John's version, or Alison's ... yes, it
would be good
to wrap this up.

Thanks!
Nan

Hi Alison and all -

Either of these definitions looks fine to me. I'd prefer Alison's,
because John's version might be a little misleading - the phrase
'measure of salinity' has some implications that aren't cleared up
fast enough in the text for me.

I'm mainly interested in moving the units along, though, so whatever
is needed for the definition to work for us is all good.

Thanks very much -
Nan
