it would be easy if your CF server and SQL server sit in the same domain
and as long as both server can communicate thru tcp/ip, it should not be any
problem, i'm having a CF on Sun Solaris that connect to a DB2 on AS400, work
fine.
if you plan to used Advanced Security then again siteminder might be the
problem for you :)
