If that's the most ridiculous thing you've heard, you need to get out more!

Seriously, I can understand why they'd be reluctant to address this, as it
could easily get quite complicated. The devil's in the details, they say.

You can do this pretty easily, on a per-virtual-server basis, but if you've
assigned the .cfm extension to the CF 5 ISAPI extension for the Global Web
Site, you'll need to reassign it specifically to each virtual server that
will continue using CF 5. Then, you can assign the CFMX ISAPI DLL to .cfm
files for each virtual server that will use CFMX. You can easily do this
using the Web Site Configuration tool that is in the CFMX 6.1 Start Menu
folder.

I haven't tried this. I imagine that it might work, but with some caveats.
By default, CFMX uses an ISAPI filter, not an extension, and this will
override any ISAPI extensions. If you configure CFMX to use an ISAPI
extension instead, that may cause other problems.
