I Inherited two servers in an old web infrastructure: a production
server and a development server.

Both run coldfusion 5.0, IIS, and an SQL 2000 instance on windows 2k.

I Also have a few (3-4) non cold fusion web servers doing .net
applications or static pages, all of which are way under utilized.

I have the opportunity to rebuild our web infrastructure and am
wondering what would be the best?

My initial thought is two or more IIS only servers mirroring all of the
sites we host using windows 2k3 and its built in NLB to share the load.

A dedicate SQL 2000 server (or 2005?) for our databases.

I have tested some of application and most haven't had trouble on
coldfusion mx 7, so i would like to upgrade to that.

What are the options for where to run coldfusion? Don't think we can
afford the enterprise edition and we really only need one instance (and
probably only have the budget for one standard edition license).

Can i run the standard edition on the SQL server? can i run it on a
stand alone box? Where is some of this documented? I found an old
article on distributed coldfusion processing in 4.5, but don't know if
it applies to mx 7.

The old servers are dual cpu 1ghz 512mb ram machines and will be retired
as the new underutilized servers we already have are all intel dual core
2.5+ ghz 2gb ram and as i said we have (3-4 of those to rebuild with).

And i'll run development on my laptop, or reuse the retired systems for
development.

Thanks for any help or info!!
