Because I did not get a bunch of replies starting "It is a well known fact that ..." I concluded that it is something in the code not the server. The answer is that one of the fields I wanted to update did not have a value for updating. The server at the ISP rejected it and gave me the "No columns found" message whereas the local CF9 server was more tolerant. Removing the field from the update list solved it - alternatively I could have ensured that the field had a value. Maintaining someone elses 6 year old code is not a fun thing. Thanks Jim
