You have no obligation to insure that the company is holding the appropriate licenses and cannot be held liable in any way if they don't. >From a practical standpoint, I don't think it is realistic to be provided proof of licensing, but a good barometer would be to look at hosting companies "partners or alliances" page and see if they are "certified partner" of the software in question. Besides that, there is no substitute for good judgement. My 2 cents... -----Original Message----- From: Jim McAtee [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, May 04, 2000 11:46 AM To: cf-talk Subject: OT: Hosting Question - Software Licensing Is it reasonable to ask a hosting provider for proof of licensing for server software such as NT, CF server, SQL server, e-commerce applications, mail servers, etc.? Has anyone done this? On the one hand this would seem very intrusive - especially if the host has multiple servers and you insist that they prove they have sufficient licensing for all servers (and cpu's, where applicable). On the other hand, it strikes me that a large host might save tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars by not fully licensing software, with little likelihood of detection. If your site is being hosted by an outside provider in a shared environment what do you feel are your obligations for assuring that "you" are properly abiding licensing agreements?
