Using a long column in an 8.1.6 database, native drivers, CF 4.5, no problem doing this using a standard <cfquery>select field from table</cfquery>. I tested it with a quick table and read in an 88k file and inserted that, then read it back out again.
Do you have the 'enable retrieval of long text' checked in the datasource? What kind of error are you getting?
