I tried that also and I get crazy things like "
{08A95C45-4CEE-4A86-9B18-13DA30C013C9}" inserted as the subdir_id if I
have the fieldsize set as "Replication ID", or " -2138072423" if I have
it set for "Long Integer".

Add the field name to the query:

INSERT INTO subdir (subdir)
VALUES ('#good#')
