I don't work with FM much (read: if I can help it) but others here are pretty knowledgable about it.
While working with a multi-DB project (SQL & FM, if you believe) what I was told was that the ODBC drivers for FM are pretty leaky and crash-prone. On top of that, they are rather slow (even on FM server) as compared to a native SQL server. And, of course, FM is only partially SQL compliant. I may be off on the particulars, but that's the gist of what I heard.
