There are a good number of hosting services that setup your root/home
directory one level above the web root.  So when you first login via FTP,
you see something like:
        d---------      database        ...[rest of FTP stuff]...
        d---------      html            ...[rest of FTP stuff]...

And (in this case) "html" is the webroot.  Not that this should force you to
move to a new hosting service, but it's certainly something to keep in mind.
