It really is highly dependent on the behavior of your application(s). 
Even if it causes things to run slower, if it stops the crashes, that 
may be more important to you. I'd originally heard recommendations of 
keeping it down to 4-5 threads per CPU but after a lot of load testing 
we have our active threads set way higher than that because that gave 
us the best performance.
