Tony, I had something similar happen. What it turned out to be was an
extremely obscure architecture problem with a motherboard component (the
southbridge chip) which controls all the I/O and it conflicting with a
Creative Soundblaster Live! sound card. Basically, after any moderate
activity across the southbridge (audio, drive access, USB, etc.) the
southbridge would freak out and one of the results was screeching audio
from
the speakers plugged into the soundcard.

I don't know if it's something similar. In my case it was a particular
VIA
southbridge chip (686B) which was mostly only used on Athlon systems.
What
it amounts to though in your case is a call to Sony tech support, likely
a
reinstall of the OS to get rid of any other possibilities, and maybe an
RMA
of the system.
