There are many very subtle (yet tremendously effective) typesetting techniques at use in any novel that are not conveyed by plain ASCII text. Spacing, typeface, typestyle, meter, kerning, etc - they all work together in a well-constructed paper book. We're still not there in any form online - comparing plain text email to a novel is just apples and oranges.
