Ya you need to convert it via a function....and for the life of me I can't remember what it's called (just found it a month ago)...try Google..."Oracle 9 SELECT BLOB"....should point ya in the right direction ;-)

  CF 5 and earlier cannot select a BLOB....but you can get some Java based
  custom tags to do it
