Your mail server sounds like the culprit. I was testing Argosoft Pro a few weeks back, and I quickly learned to set its max thread use to the full 12 rather than the default of 3. Further, I inadvertently left mail queue size at its default of 500. During a mass mailing the queue piled up to 500 items and then CF was only able to transport a spooled file out of its own spool when Argosoft managed to get stuff out of *its* queue... all at its snail's pace, made worse since many files it was trying to send required retries, thereby piling up the queue's count of long-term residents.
Setting the mail queue max to a high number and restarting the service fixed that problem, although I still wasn't impressed by its ability to send mail in any kind of volume.
